Male intrasexual aggression and partial dominance of females over males in vervet monkeys

چکیده

Females dominate a subset of the males in minority mammalian species despite male-biased sexual dimorphism. How this may arise is suggested by computational model, DomWorld. The model represents dimorphism through males’ greater initial dominance and higher intensity aggression, meaning that fights initiated have impact than those females. shows female over increases with proportion group. This happens because when are involved larger fraction results hierarchical differentiation (i.e., steepness). causes rank overlap between sexes partial dominance). The data gathered by human observers studying the behavior of nonhuman primates often reveal a social structure of apparently striking complexity. Social groups are composed of a number of different families of different dominance ranks, each of which both competes and cooperates with other families in the group. It is often difficult for the observer to imagine that the monkeys could function ...

Do human females use indirect aggression as an intrasexual competition strategy?

Indirect aggression includes behaviours such as criticizing a competitor's appearance, spreading rumours about a person's sexual behaviour and social exclusion. Human females have a particular proclivity for using indirect aggression, which is typically directed at other females, especially attractive and sexually available females, in the context of intrasexual competition for mates. Indirect ...
